Could Assa be your new favourite Korean restaurant in London?

With it’s unassuming entrance on a side street off of Shaftsbury Avenue in Central London, you might think it a little dreary and no go zone. But boy would you be wrong!

This is a little gem of a place that I’ve been coming back to for the last 10 years.

It’s true what they say, you should always peak inside a restaurant and look at the diners. If the restaurant offers a specific cuisine, and the diners are mostly from the same place…you know it’s going to be good.

In Assa, you can get some really delicious dishes, packed full of flavour. Here are just some of the ones I’ve tried:

  1. Pork Bu Dae Jji Gae Hot Pot – Spicy marinated pork, pork ham, chicken sausage, kimchi & ramyeon noodle
  2. Jap Chae – Stir fried sweet potato noodle, vegetable & pork
  3. Pork belly – with sesame oil & salt
  4. Kimchi Jeon – Kimchi pancake
  5. Bean sprouts in sesame oil
  6. Seaweed

This time I got a side dish of Rice Cakes and it was the best decision to date. It soaked up all the sauce from the hotpot and with its slightly chewy but soft texture, it was bursting with spicy goodness. Sadly I did not take a picture (too busy eating!) but I would highly recommend it.

The next bit is their pork belly. Now I’ll admit, over the years it has occasionally been hit or miss, but for the most part it adds a deliciously salty taste to break up the palette and I order every time I visit.

Their Jap Chae is a must try too! It has the perfect amount of sweetness and the sweet potato noodles are ever so slightly chewy (that seems to be a theme here but all in the best possible way!)
