The Eight is a Hong Kong style restaurant in Chinatown, London. With it’s long queues and café style service, you may be tempted to give it a miss but that would be a huge mistake! Whilst the queues can be long, I’d highly recommend giving this place a try…if you have the time.
The first time I visited this place, we queued for over an hour to get a seat for dinner, now admittedly there were 7 of us so it would have been difficult to get a table at any restaurant in London without a booking. I have since eaten at this place a couple of times and the food is simply delicious.
Here is what I’ve ordered during my visits:
- Pork chop with salad sauce
- Chinese Kai Lan
- Black truffle seafood fried rice (waiter’s recommendation)
- Braised beancurd with meat and spicy sauce (Mapo tofu)
- Salted egg duck noodles
- Salted egg on toast
- 3 meats (duck, char siu, roast pork)
- Stir fried ho fun with beef
- Special fried rice
- Shredded pork fried noodles
I was pleasantly surprised by the truffle fried rice as I’ve never been a fan of truffle. Controversial I know, but hear me out. A lot of dishes I’ve tried over the years have been far too strong, the truffle has simply overpowered the entire dish. However, with this one, it had a subtle flavour which meant I could taste the other ingredients and I found myself going for seconds.
The pork chop was also really tasty and interestingly, they’d added blueberries to the dish. I would have never paired the two together but it balanced out the salad sauce and gave a nice tartness to the pork when eaten together.
Lastly, I was most excited about the salted egg toast as I am OBSESSED with anything salted egg yolk (I’ll be sharing my favourite salted egg yolk dishes in a separate post, so keep an eye out for it!). For me, I’d say it was a solid 6 out of 10 but I’m keen to try it again next time just to make sure.
All in all, I’d recommend trying this place out and ordering a few different dishes to share, especially their black truffle seafood fried rice!
